Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is a cosmetic procedure which removes the top layers of your skin.

This helps to remove skin imperfections such as wrinkles, acne scarring and also acts to make the skin look smooth.

When performed by a certified dermatologist, this is an entirely safe procedure – and boasts the benefit of being convenient due to the lack of downtime for recovery.

Results of dermaplaning typically last for three weeks.

What is dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is a skin treatment in which a little blade removes the top layers of skin, alongside the tiny little hairs which we have all over our face.

It can be used on every skin type, and can help in particular with issues such as acne scarring, dull skin, fine wrinkles and sun-damaged skin.

How it works

The basic concept of dermaplaning is the same as shaving. A small blade is run along the skin at a 45 degree angle, which then removes dead skin cells, hair and other surface level debris.

Daily, your skin is open to the damages of pollution and other toxins, which can make skin appear aged. Through this process, it is possible to remove this dull top layer, revealing your young and fresh skin underneath.

The procedure

For a dermaplaning procedure, you shouldn’t feel any pain. While it is possible to feel slight tingling sensations as you are being treated, if you feel pain it is important that you inform your dermatologist immediately.

Risks and Side Effects

There are very few risks to dermaplaning, but it is possible to end up with a slight redness to the skin after the treatment. Sometimes, whiteheads may develop the next day as well.

Whilst rare, infection and scarring can occur in a dermaplaning treatment, and in this situation you should consult your doctor.

What to expect

You will most likely feel a sense of redness in the days immediately after your procedure, but the full brightness of your skin will be truly visible after a few days.

The results, however, aren’t permanent. After three weeks to a month, you’ll have to get the dermaplaning treatment again in order to maintain this youthful glow.

Preparing for Dermaplaning

When preparing for dermaplaning, it is important to spend the week beforehand out of the sun or any UV light.

If you have an acne flair up in the run up to your treatment, it may be better to delay the procedure to prevent irritation of the skin.
